Pilot Study Examining Caregiver–Child and Family Functioning in PEERS® for Preschoolers

Abstract Social impairments characteristic of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are evident in early childhood and often worsen. Research indicates including caregivers social skills groups may increase generalization for child outcomes, while also benefiting by increasing their self-confidence ability to coach child. Further, there be an impact on the entire family. This pilot study examined benefits caregiver–child relationship, caregiver self-efficacy, parenting style, family functioning exploratory PEERS ® Preschoolers (P4P) program. The present aimed examine above variables with 15 children ASD (11 boys; 66.7% white) without intellectual impairment four groups, applying this novel intervention, informed other programs. Children ranged from 4 7 years ( M = 4.87, SD 1.25). participated twice weekly (i.e., 8 weeks, 16 sessions). Measures that captured specified were completed as well through observational task. Results showed increases self-efficacy positive interaction strategies, specifically affect/animation achievement orientation over intervention at follow-up. Caregivers noted improvements overall styles. Changes not indicated. positively both caregiver, though more research is needed larger samples include a control group apply conclusions population. Future should address why changes did emerge specific mechanisms lead caregiver-specific outcomes.
